I Wanna Marry The Night

It's drawing ever closer to the weekend. This means that as time passes, I'm becoming closer to my holiday to Turkey next week! EXACTLY ONE WEEK TODAY! My boyfriend is coming too.

I'm so excited. I have a mountain of clothes I am taking with me.

I've decided to share some of my holiday looks with you. I have far too many clothes to come remotely close to showing you even half of the garments I am taking (see wardrobe picture), but I've taken some photographs of outfits that I shall wear at night since I will be wearing nothing but bikini and shorts combinations during the day. I reckon it will be far too hot to wear anymore than this anyway.

Since my day-time wardrobe won't be of too much interest and variation, I thought it would be a little more interesting to photograph the items I'll wear in the evening time! I can't wait for midnight walks on the beach, indulging on cocktails and ultimately, just talking to my boyfriend. Over the past 3 and a half years we've kind of merged together, we are pretty much the same person.

"DADDY, I want a pony"

I LOVE LUELLA.

She describes her style of clothes as ""the kind of clothes you can get drunk and fall over in".

To me, her clothes are "proper English" with a pixie, punky, geeky, playful, childish twist... If that is even possible? Her clothes are very today - a mish mash of juxtaposing styles that is very tongue and cheek.

To take it one step further, to me it almost reminds me of a child raking through their mother's wardrobes, clothes trunks and jewelry boxes to create looks that are so wrong, they work. I feel that this, is quintessential Luella. I feel that she breaks the rules of the runway, in a way that is so innocent. All of the models are so distinct, yet all of that classic "London Luella Girl" attitude that flows throughout of all Luella's shows.

My favourite show is Spring 2008. I think Agyness Deyn describes Luella's signature style perfectly in this video.

 

Especially love the cat masks - but everyone knows I am bias since I adore cats...

Luella's celebrity clientele includes Chloë Sevigny, I love this dress. It reminds me of pink glittery origami.

I have been neglecting my Fashion books recently. I've actually bought "Luella's Guide To English Style" not so long ago but I haven't got round to reading it yet. I think I will cease the opportunity to read it tonight and then blog about my feelings on it tomorrow.

Speaking of books, I have always wanted to purchase Fifi Lapin's "What Shall I Wear Today?"

The book is written by a small fluffy bunny rabbit called Fifi who advises readers on what to wear.

The fashion drawings are so appealing to me - cute little rabbits in haute couture.

Attack Of The Pirate Brides - Gaultier Spring 2008

Today I went into town with my mum. Here is what I wore to go shopping with her.

I tend not to upload photo's of myself wearing outfits often as that's not really the style of my blog, but I quite liked what I was wearing today!

I usally wear LOTS of dark purple MAC lipstick, but its quite a dark and wintery colour. I'm trying to embrace Summer by looking as bare faced as possible.

My mother and I got our feet bitten by little fish today. It was so strange, I thought I was going to wet myself with laughter.

I then went to H&M and bought an array of holiday t-shirts for when me and my boyfriend go away! (I understand my last blog sounded like we'd split up or something, but fortunately not, he's offshore just now and comes back Monday).

Speaking of fish, a designer who notably took influence from not only fish, but mermaids and pirates, is Jean Paul Gaultier.

I've always had such an admiration for Gaultier from a young age. This show may be old, but it still remains contemporary to me. It's so playful, sexy and rather androgynous at times. I love how the models power down the runway, like haggard pirate phantoms. I especially love the PIRATE BRIDES at the end of the show. Theatrical brilliance. Westwood meets Galliano.

I feel that Gaultier has such an indisputable understanding of the female frame. No other Fashion Designer quite understands a womans body like Gaultier.

Vintage jewels Monday

I have a kind of crazy neighbour that lives across the street from me...

She often gives me GENUINE vintage pieces. She's given me tons of bags from the 40's/50's (I wrote a post about this ages ago) but recently, she's now moved on to giving me jewelry.

She has been so kind and donated some lovely pieces to me. There is a beautiful selection of costume jewelry ranging from beaded necklaces to gem encrusted brooches.

She assures me that although the jewelry materials are not precious, she simply cannot part with them. I feel delighted that they've been passed on to me. I'm such a hoarder - I can almost guarantee I shall be passing these down to a granddaughter in many years to come. They will last the test of time, trust me.

I enjoy photographing accessories, they don't talk or fidget...

I really like all the pieces - especially the pendant with the embroidery bird!

I wore my favourite pair of leggings today, I then realised that I looked terribly patriotic. Happy 4th July :)

I'm thankful to be blessed with great health and a wonderful family. Recently I've went on a manic health-kick which involves eating healthily and running everyday, I can honestly say I've never felt better.

Hopefully its another lovely day tomorrow so I can laze in my garden with my companion Mr Nikon. I am beginning to become incredibly lonesome and needy since my boyfriend and I parted ways 3 weeks ago. On the other hand, the count down is on to our holiday to Turkey (1 week on Thursday). Oh the joys.

GARETH PUGH - PARIS FW FALL 2011

I've had such a boring day today...

Went for my daily run and now my legs are in PAIN, sat in my back garden for a while then retreated back into my house shortly after, watched a documentary on how the earth would defend itself if we were to encounter an alien invasion.... Y'know, the usual.

I didn't get round to watching "The Cat Returns" either :( ... I wait up late every night waiting for my boyfriend to call me from offshore (we only get to talk a couple of times a day for a few minutes at a time) and after that I was so fatigued, I conked out and didn't rise until after 1PM...

To ignite some enthusiasm, I've decided to write a little bit about one of my many favourite Designers - Gareth Pugh.

When I was interning at Philip Treacy's studio, I met him on my last day! (Lets not be too romantic, it was a "hello, hi, how are you?, good, great!" conversation, but I was delighted nonetheless).

I love his Gothic, surreal, alien-like, over the top, dark and sinister creations.

PARIS FW FALL 2011 - GARETH PUGH

There is something kind of "cyber-goth"/MATRIX-esque about this collection.

The layers are so structured and shell like. I love the contrasting blue crepe half way though the show. Simple, yet beautiful and elegant.

Then, it gets even better. An infusion of gold, glitter sequins, hoods, leather.

The models remind me of alien-esque insect-like creatures. You can just catch a glimpse of the LED mouthpieces they wear on the finale walk to enhance the creature-esque effect. (See picture below).

Its always the finer details that amuse me. When watching any runway show I try and pay particular attention to the styling techniques applied. The LED mouth pieces, the applique cardboard-cut-out eye pieces, the flyaway hair. Genius.

Really proud to say I met Gareth Pugh. If you could meet any designer, who would it be..?

British Fashion Designers

Today has been a good day!

I went shopping with my mum in the morning and then decided to relax in my back garden for a while.

For those of you who do not know, I live in Aberdeen. In Aberdeen, sun is a very rare thing so I ceased the opportunity to make the most of it while it was there. I took some photo's in the garden and read "British Fashion Designers" by Hywel Davies. I have had this book in my possession for about a year now and little did I know when I met Hywel Davies (he came to my University and spoke to the Fashion students), that I actually had one of his books. At the time of purchase, I did not take time to appreciate the authors name. Had I know Hywel wrote this book, I would have went in to the lecture with him in a different frame of mind all together.

The book is beautiful with stunning imagery throughout. It also provides an intimate look into how some of Britain's notorious Designers perceive British Fashion.

Through reading the book, one Designer really interested me - Cassette Playa.

"Designed by Carri Mundane Cassette Playa is renowned for its kaleidoscopic casual uniform that has been appropriated by London's club kids. Inspired by real and virtual worlds, Mundane has an energetic vision that is inherently graphic and modern" - Hywel Davies*

The garments are OUT OF THIS WORLD insaaaaaaaaane! They seem to have a 90's rave mood but with a modern and contemporary feel...Why had I not heard of Cassette Playa before??

The prints, colours and graphics are beautiful. I could get lost in the mesmerising patterns. There is something so "Tokyo-esque" about Mundane's clothes, I could see her designs being worn as street fashion there.

There is such a fierce attitude that exudes from the clothing. I think that is because I associate the clothes with a Kanye West hip hop vibe.

 "She says 'I draw really heavily from ancient hunting rituals, but my collection was also inspired by Eighties and Nineties skate culture...I wanted to bring that ancient Shamanic vibe to the city today.' Aztec art was cited as inspiring her use of orange in early lines. She describes some of her designs as 'quite cartoon' but that she has 'no intention of making people look funny'. Designing wear for men, she feels her designs make male wearers more 'masculinated', stating 'You have to be hard to carry it off.' Interested in video games, her most recent line references YouTube, text messaging and circuit bending, propelled by her desire to create a matrix with wearers 'stepping into the gaming world with no way to get back out.'"

I think her designs are so avant garde and bold. I'm definitely going to keep a close eye on her in the future.

I hope everyone is having a lovely weekend so far! My sincerest apologies to some of the people I follow - every night I check all of the pages I am following and write comments to the majority of them. I think that it is important to keep the communication flowing and I love seeing what you have all been up to. My boyfriend is also offshore at the moment (he works in the oil industry) so I've had extra spare time on my hands recently. Therefore, I pretty much see my blog as my full time job!

I will check out everyone's pages tomorrow and leave comments, right now I'm going to bed! (I will hopefully get round to watching "The Cat Returns" tonight).

"AU NATURAL"

I love mornings like I had this morning.

I woke up as a chink of sunlight reached me from my window. I looked outside and it was a gorgeous sunny day.

My mum soon came into my room with a DVD that had come in the post for me - the much anticipated "The Cat Returns". I've become obsessed with Studio Ghibli recently. So far I've only seen Spirited Away, Ponyo and Howl's Moving Castle and I am hooked.

I watched Spirited away a couple of years ago and felt so enchanted. There was something about the film that brought me such serenity and happiness. Now, whenever I have had a crummy day or I feel scared/anxious before going to bed I always watch Spirited Away. The film is so surreal and dreamy - it always puts me straight to sleep.

I then got up and went for my daily run - I'm trying so hard to tone up before I go on holiday with my boyfriend in 2 weeks time. This was closely followed by a showering and then blow drying my hair.

For once this morning, my rare freckles made an appearance and I decided to take some shots on my Nikon.

These photo's may seem quite irrelevant and strange, but I can't quite put into words how at peace with the world I felt this morning - taking some photographs to document the moment seemed right to me.

Call me crazy to upload pictures of myself bare faced, but I try and not let makeup dictate everything - although I DO love my makeup! 

Has anyone else seen any of the Studio Ghibli films? I'm curious to know if the films have same effect on you as they do me!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend - no plans for me other than catching up with old friends. My mum and I may go to a spa to get our feet bitten by those little fishes that soften your feet, but thats a completely different story all together...
